Paul Illsley recently launched a Kings County Place Names Project website in hopes of gathering information that will reveal the origins behind the names of local communities and bodies of water.

The information collected will be worked into a document that he plans to have added to the archives at the Kings County Museum. Paul hopes locals with information regarding place names in Kings County will seize the opportunity to share what they know for the benefit of future generations.

If we want to change our attitude towards the earth, it’s resources and our place on its surface, we must become more informed about our ‘geography’; not simply latitude and longitude, but rather ourselves and the processes that affect our behavior. bobmaher_19jan17

Geography, in an holistic sense, is physical, biological, economic and social. It is spatial and temporal: neighborhoods, regions, countries and global; hours, days, years, decades, centuries, lifetimes and beyond.

What matters is that we creatively communicate and understand our geography through our spoken language, our writing, art, music, and technology. This means ‘geography education’.

Over hundred geomatics related professionals and students specializing in the field of geomatics are at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) in Lawrencetown this week to take a closer look at topics, trends and technologies used in high resolution mapping areas where land meets the sea.

“This work is critical, especially to to enhance and help Nova Scotia’s rural economy when it comes to development of our coastal resources,” said Tim Webster, who is the lead scientist with the Applied Geomatics Research Group at NSCC Middleton campus and chair of the N.S. Canadian Institute of Geomatics.

A workshop called high resolution mapping in the Coastal Zone features speakers from Sweden, Ottawa and the AGRG presenting information to provincial and federal government officials, students and the private sector.

Many questions related to issues in Nova Scotia such as climate, poverty, disease, migration, water, energy, and biodiversity all demand geographical analysis. Geographical information has significant impact on all of us: it helps generate economic benefit, influences government policy, delivery of services, and improves our overall quality of life.

The study of geography helps young people develop the knowledge and understanding to become better informed citizens and providing them with the skills to pursue a range of careers. However contrary to what many people believe learning geography related skills is not limited to K-12 education programs since most of us retain more information through hands on opportunities.

Geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt that utilizes maps and a GPS (or a smart phone) to help people locate items left by others at designated locations. Last May GANS held a geo related scavenger hunt event at the Museum of Natural History.

The event provided a hands on opportunity to learn geography while using geographic applications (via smart phone or tablet) to create ArcGIS online maps.

On behalf of the Nova Scotia geomatics community, GANS would like to congratulate Jeff McKenna (a GANS corporate sponsor, former GANS VP and board member) on his recent international recognition.

Jeff, a proud member of the Nova Scotia geospatial community was honored to receive the 2016 Sol Katz OSGeo Award during the FOSS4G-2016 conference in Bonn, Germany, in front of 900 attendees (including the head of Google Maps, the head of Esri dev and education, and the whos-who of GEO).

The award is presented in recognition of Jeff's deep passion for FOSS4G and relentless effort to promote OSGeo Foundation around the world. He has been involved in OSGeo since the foundation was formed in 2006.

"Today, it isn't about one company or one standard or one software for geomatics, it is about being open and sharing.  Finally, the world gets it. " (Jeff McKenna, Gateway Geomatics).
