The following was posted to the GANS LinkedIn page by Chris Foran, Managing Partner at Servant, Dunbrack, McKenzie & MacDonald...

"As someone who is keenly interested in advancing BIM technologies and deliverables in HRM and the Atlantic Provinces I'm continuously challenged with sourcing reliable geospatial data. In my quest for data I'm left feeling envious of our neighbors to the South who make SO much quality data readily available to end users.

I would be very interested to learn about any open data initiatives that exist today in NS and how our firm can collaborate with regulatory and government entities to help develop the state of BIM in the Atlantic Region."

Thoughts on this?  Seems like a project that GANS could help champion!  Could you also benefit from such an initiative in your firm?

Regretfully GANS was unable to attend the COGS 2014 Career Fair due to poor travel conditions caused by Wednesday's blizzard. It looks like there was a successful turnout of several companies and government services. Congratulations COGS-NSCC on your noteworthy event and providing your students with such valuable insight on career prospects in the geomatics community. Check out some of Paul Illsley's photos of this great event HERE!

GeoConnections is pleased to invite you to a webinar on:

Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) Open Licensing Project

English Webinar: Tuesday, February 11, 2014 – 1:30-3:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time)

French Webinar: Thursday, February 13, 2014 – 1:30-3:00 PM (Eastern Standard Time)

    Webinar Overview:

GeoConnections, a national initiative led by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), recently collaborated with the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) on a project to build awareness on data licensing in Canada: educating data users and providing them with the resources and tools they need to navigate data licensing’s complex legal landscape.

Canadian data providers currently use a milieu of locally-developed and often incompatible data licenses. In order to increase international co-operation and license harmonization, CIPPIC has created outreach, education, and partnerships that focus awareness, understanding and support for use of Creative Commons and other international license standards in Canada. Geospatial data users often need to combine data sets that fall under the terms of other data licenses. Unfortunately, this is often problematic. Data licenses do not always permit users to combine different licenses and, to further complicate matters, the many varied and complex clauses in licenses can be very confusing.

CIPPIC has developed a Data Compatibility Toolkit, including a detailed report, a user guide, and a web-based tool. The report and easy-to-read guide discuss and explain compatibility amongst existing Canadian data license terms, as well as between Canadian licenses and common international licenses. The web-based tool provides functionality that will allow users to easily determine the compatibility of datasets from different sources. In addition, CIPPIC has also developed a Licensing Risk Assessment Toolkit. The toolkit helps users to analyze and discuss legal risks; the web-based tool will allow users to select a particular license and plainly analyze the legal risks to which they may expose themselves. These resources are freely available via http://clipol.org/.

    You will learn more about:

    Morning Everyone,

Here is something a little interesting.  How can GIS be used in the marine environment?  Late last year, we heard about Lydia, the great white, spending time off our east coast and even taking some time to visit Newfoundland. (see earlier post for the link).

We're well aware of the diversity of uses for GIS, how are others using the technology?  Well, the New England Aquarium in Boston is using Marine GIS for tracking right whales, evaluating aquaculture sites, and even a children's summer camp (marine science 101).

While I'm thinking of students, what I immediately think of is the wonderful Marine GIS program at COGS.  I certainly can't forget the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, affectionately known as BIO.  They've been using GIS since before my career, across several disciplines, checkout their spotlight on Science.

Let's not forget our friends with The Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee, known as COINAtlantic either.

Interested in the Oceans?, Oceanography?, Marine Biology well, there's a Oceans'14 Conference coming up later this year in St. John's NF later this year that may interest you.

Seems that Atlantic Canada is the spatial place to be this year, and there's other things I'm sure that will come up in the coming months that we in the industry will be interested in also.  So stay tuned and visit our corporate sponsors.  Collectively, we are changing the way the world is viewed, not just the oceans.

How about you?  Find anything interesting on Marine GIS to add to this thread?

Have a nice weekend everyone and Cheers,
    G
