    My name is Andrew van Wychen and I am a Geographic Information Systems student seeking a co-op or student opportunity to gain work experience in Nova Scotia.

    I have excelled in my coursework in GIS maintaining a 4.0 GPA in the BGIS program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). I have a previous degree in Biology from Mt. Allison University and extensive experience working in a food and environmental microbiology laboratory.

    After deciding I wanted to make a career change I was drawn to the field of GIS and enrolled in the BGIS program at SAIT. Having completed the program I am now pursuing a opportunity to transition into the field of GIS and to gain experience in the industry.

    Manager- Asset Information Services (Permanent)

    The incumbent is responsible for developing and deploying asset information solutions within Transportation by using an overall strategic framework and comprehensive project plan methodology.  Facilitates planning sessions, identifies overall operational direction and scope, and ensures that outcomes are aligned with broader asset information initiatives within Transportation and other government departments. The incumbent will also ensure implementation of asset information management plans by integrating a spatial information management approach that aligns with daily operations throughout the department, including the integration of GIS tools with the Provincial Road Listing Database, the Departments Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) and Structures Information Systems as well as the Provincial civic addressing program.  Ensures the asset information environment is designed to capture, manage, present, and monitor asset information, demonstrating continued focus on business goals and supporting corporate decision making. Other duties include directing the development, continual improvement, renewal and administration of Transportation’s infrastructure information, mapping services and associated geographic information management policies, systems and planning. Ensures adherence to departmental strategic directives, legislative requirements and best practices. 

    The Manager provides leadership and strategic direction for sustainable information management and information technology within the department by ensuring that the information and technologies are well aligned with the current and future needs of the department’s business areas.  Oversees the development of standards, policies and operational procedures relative to system requirements that clearly support business processes and maintain an open information architecture. Recommends software requirements and digital file storage systems to support informed management decisions across business areas. Leads the collection, tracking and ongoing maintenance of asset information within the department by developing policies and procedures for data collection, changes to data attributes and dissemination of asset information.

    Bachelor of Science degree, plus 5 years of professional management experience and supervisory experience.     The Department of Earth Sciences at Dalhousie University seeks to fill a full-time instructor position in the field of Geographic Information Systems. 

    The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching the concepts and applications of GIS and remote sensing, and with the general development of the GIS programme. In addition, he or she will teach the use of other computer applications, assist in the delivery of the department’s field schools, manage the GIS laboratory and equipment, and support other teaching and research in the Department.

    Applicants must have a minimum of M.Sc. in Earth Sciences or a closely related field, with relevant experience teaching GIS and related concepts. In addition, the successful applicant will have experience in one or more of: government or industry employment, supervision of student research projects, geophysical field methods and instrumentation, operation and management of computer systems and networks, and troubleshooting and repair of electronic equipment.

    The Instructor will also contribute to Department, Faculty, and University committees and administration as needed, especially in areas relevant to undergraduate teaching. The Instructor will be actively involved in Department outreach activities. Continuing professional development, particularly in learning and teaching, is strongly encouraged.

    Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the permanent position of Data Analyst, Finance & ICT.

    Reporting to the Manager, Business Intelligence & Data Services (BIDS) the Data Analyst is responsible for the development, analysis, management and coordination of HRM data assets (spatial and non-spatial) established through corporate initiatives and operations. The Data Analyst leads in all technical practices encompassing the rationalization, collection, processing, distribution, analysis, archiving and governance of HRM data assets. The Data Analyst works closely with other data professionals within ICT to ensure data policies, standards compliances and defined corporate data management targets are met. The incumbent also acts as a liaison with external agencies to address their needs relative to HRM data assets.


    Data Management

    Identify and/or profile the potential or existing internal and external data resources.

    Develop and/or manage data maintenance plans to maintain and support the existing data assets. This would include, but not be limited to, procedures for: data integrity; data auditing; data security; data archiving; and data retention.

    Develop an understanding of business and corporate needs. This would include the ability to develop logical data models to meet those business needs, and to develop physical data models to properly implement those needs in a physical operating environment.

    Education and Experience:

    Post-secondary degree relevant to information management, analytics, GIS, or statistics.

    A minimum of three years of relevant experience with data management & analysis, Business Intelligence or GIS, preferably within public sector.

    Demonstrated experience in GIS tools, database management systems and/or development tools.

    Familiarity with Master Data Management practices; Data Governance practices; Business Intelligence related data analysis; Business Process Management; and ITIL Concepts.

    Experience in Customer Relationship Management is preferred.

    Experience working in a municipal environment is preferred.

    Technical/Job Specific Knowledge:

    Position Summary

    Performs real property functions and administrative duties for Real Estate including Geographical Information System (GIS), review of property grants/documents and real estate related documents, Payment in Lieu of Taxes, and preparing letters and reports as directed by the Manager, Real Property.

    Organization Structure

    The Real Property Assistant reports to the Manager, Real Property.   Other positions reporting the Manager, Real Property is a seasonal student and the Lease Administrator with shared reporting with the Manager, Real Estate and Tenant Services.

    Regular Duties and Responsibilities

    A.        Real Property/GIS:

    1.                  Creates maps and inputs and updates data into the GIS System ensuring accuracy.

    2.                  Reconciles square footage of property.

    3.                  Prepares tenant leases.

    B.        PILT (Property Tax)

    1.      Assists in reconciliation of Assessment file to HPA’s tenant records.

    2.      Assists in reconciliation of Halifax Regional Municipality tax file to HPA’s records.

    C.        Administration:

    1.         Prepares letters and reports for the Manager, Real Property.

    2.         Responds to general day-to-day queries and escalates as required to the Manager, Real Property.

    E.        Other

    4. Proficient in Geographic Information Systems is essential.
    5. Familiarity with the PILT Act or Property Tax, legal survey plans, commercial real estate documents would be an asset.
    6. Above average skill in Excel an asset.
